Athens is a city in Limestone County, Alabama, and is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Metro Area. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 18,967.
Athens is located in the center of Northern Alabama 15 miles from the Tennessee State line in historic Limestone County.

Education is a source of pride in the community, with its award-winning public school system and Athens State University which has been in operation since the 1800's. With all the diversification Athens has to offer, no wonder Athens is truly a city of Southern Splendor.
Athens is the home of Browns Ferry nuclear plant, a Tennessee Valley Authority installation of 1974 that was once the world's largest nuclear plant and provides many jobs to the area and most of the electricity for the Huntsville-Decatur Metro Area.
Athens' historic district has narrow, tree-lined avenues with many examples of antebellum architecture and is a nationally protected district. Many of these buildings can be seen on a self-guided Antebellum driving trail that takes you through Limestone County.
Athens is one of the oldest incorporated cities in the State of Alabama, having been incorporated one year prior to the state's admittal to the Union in 1819.
Athens was traditionally a cotton and railroad town, but since the local aerospace boom of the 1950's and 1960's it has increasingly entered the orbit of nearby industry center Huntsville as the area's cotton production has steadily declined.
Athens State University hosts Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention, an annual bluegrass and crafts festival. Enthusiasts from all across America and even the far corners of the earth-United Kingdom and Australia-attend the festival. The event is held in October.

Appeal Courts Uphold Conviction of An Athens Attorney and Accountant
Attorney General Troy King announced that state appeals courts have upheld the conviction of an Athens man who is an attorney and certified public accountant, for enticement, sexual abuse and unlawful imprisonment of two minor girls.
Athens police arrest burglary suspect
Athens police arrested a suspect in a gas station burglary. Police said some time during Tuesday night, the Liberty Gas Station on West Market Street was broken into.

Hartselle has secured $4 million toward the cost of a new high school and Athens State University locked in $3.2 million for an arts center in downtown Decatur.
